The Organs of St. James

The 1850 organ is the only known instrument  made by the Baltimore, Maryland, builder James Hall. The instrument is a one manual, 54 notes, English Cabinet style, with a shove keyboard and tracker action. It has a flute 8' and principal stops at 8', 4', 2' pitches. The flute and principal share a common bass. The instrument was shipped from Baltimore to Hamburg, South Carolina, at a cost of $50.00, and was brought to Greeneville by ox cart, bringing the total cost to $400.00. This organ, which at that time was the only one in town, was used until 1949, when Mary Gertrude Fox gave a small 3 rank Moeller organ which was used until the spring of 1994. This organ, which was given to St. Luke Episcopal Church in Knoxville, was replaced by the 3 manual and pedal organ, 20 ranks, built by the Schantz Organ Company of Orville, Ohio. It was used for the first time on Palm Sunday, 1994.

The Choirs of

St. James

Children's Choir -

The St. James Children's Choir is open to all youth who are in 2nd grade and beyond. The choir rehearses each Wednesday during the academic year, beginning at

6 p.m. Rehearsals are limited to 30 minutes or so. The choir has provided choral leadership at Christmas Eve 5:30 p.m. services and other times at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Plans for this year are that the choir will sing at least once a month.

Adult Choir -

The Adult Parish Choir at St. James is comprised of 12 - 16 singers; although most read music to some extent, it is not a requirement for membership. The choir is a very dedicated group of people who rehearse weekly at 7 p.m. during the academic year. The choir sings an anthem at every 10:30 a.m. Sunday Service beginning the Sunday after Labor Day and concludes around Pentecost. Several members of the choir provide cantor leadership each Sunday of the year in the singing of the Psalms. Various wind instruments and bells are used as needed. The St. James congregation has been a strong supporter of the choir. Anyone interested in singing in the choir should contact the church office for any additional information.
